Dzyanis Ramanyuk and Nasha Niva publishing house have published a monograph by Prof. Mikhas Ramanyuk Belarusian Folk Crosses. This is the last work of the well-known Belarusian ethnographer and art critic Mikhas Ramanyuk, left unfinished because of his untimely death. The monograph was prepared during 25 years of ethnographic expeditions and extensive research. Having travelled over all regions of Belarus, the author gathered unique material on folk crosses, grave signs, funeral rites. The research and analysis of gathered data resulted in a full systematization and classification within the framework of this specific subject. For the first time in the history of Belarusian ethnography, Mikhas Ramanyuk described all the forms and functions of crosses, grave signs and the places where they were put. Special importance is given to the place of funeral rites in the system of Belarusian folk culture. This is the only publication, which gives the reader a thorough and comprehensive description of this unique part of Belarusians' traditional culture. The album is intended for the broadest reading public, first of all for those interested in ethnography, history and photography. The monograph Belarusian Folk Crosses consists of 29 sections, divided into 3 chapters: I. Classification and varieties of Belarusian grave signs; II. Semantics and functions of folk grave compositions. Paganism and modern funeral attributes; III. Sacrificial («abrok») crosses. The monograph is richly illustrated. 224 pages of 24x30 cm format contain 303 photographs and 83 drawings. The text of the monograph is in Belarusian. The book is provided with indexes, resume and English translations of illustration titles and table of contents. In 2001, this book was also issued in Polish language.
