MIKHAS RAMANYUK’S BIOGRAPHY
Mikhas Ramanyuk was born on January 3, 1944 in Kavali village, Brahin rayon of Homel voblasts, as the fourth child in the family. His father Khvedar Ramanyuk died in World War II.
In 1952 the family had to move in with relatives in Starynki village, Dzyarzhynsk rayon of Mensk voblasts because of material hardships, M. Ramanyuk passed his childhood there and studied in a seven-year school.
In 1959-1963 Mikhas Ramanyuk studied at Mensk Technical Training College specializing in design and at the same time in a secondary evening school. In 1964-1971 he continued his studies at Belarusian State Theatre and Arts Institute specializing in design. In 1965-1967 he served in the army.
In 1970 Mikhas Ramanyuk went on his first ethnographic expedition on a specially-bought motor-bike.
In 1971-1974 Mikhas Ramanyuk made his postgraduate studies and in the same time started reading lectures on the material and spiritual culture of Eastern Slavs, foreign art, history of the world’s folk dress, history of Belarusian fine arts, history of Belarusian material and spiritual culture at Belarusian State Theatre and Arts Institute.
At the same time Mikhas Ramanyuk created stage dresses for H.Tsi-tovich Belarusian State academic folk choir, the dance ensemble of Belarus, lots of amateur song and dance groups, consulted Belarusfilm’s feature films.
In 1975 Mikhas Ramanyuk defended the thesis Folk Dress of Belarusi-an Palesse (late XIX—early XX century) and in 1976 was awarded MA degree.
An important event in 1976 was the purchase of a Pentacon photo camera.
Next year he took part in organizing the exposition of Zaslauye museum of handicraft and folk trades.
In 1978 Mikhas Ramanyuk joined the Union of Artists of the USSR.
In 1981 he published a set of 16 postcards Belarusian folk dress and an album Belarusian folk dress (both in Belarus publishing house) and organized an exposition of Belarusian folk dress in Mensk. Afterwards this exposition was also held in Paris and Lyon, where a book Costume nationale Bielorusse (Paris, 1981) was published on that occasion.
In 1982 Mikhas Ramanyuk was awarded two prizes at the XIV State book-art competition of Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in Vilnius: II degree as the author and photographer of the album Belarusian folk dress and III degree for Belarusian folk dress postcards. In the same year he earned a diploma of the Union of rtists of the USSR for his book Belarusian folk dress as the best work of art criticism of 1981. At the Belarusian competition for the best publication he was awarded the II degree of the State Press Committee for creating Belarusian folk dress postcard set.
In 1982 Mikhas Ramanyuk was awarded the academic title of senior lecturer of the Chair of history and theory of art, language and literature of the Belarusian Academy of Arts.
In 1982 Mikhas Ramanyuk was the founder of the magazine Mastatstva Belarusi and until 1984 was its editor-in-chief.
In 1983-1987 he was the head of the committee of the Union of Artists of Belarus for work with folk craftsmen.
In 1989-1997 he worked as the head of the Chair of history and theory of arts at the Belarusian Academy of Arts.
In 1992, thanks to the efforts of M. Ramanyuk, the Belarusian Academy of Arts opened the Department of art criticism for internal students, thus he became the beginner, creator and first head of a higher school of art criticism in Belarus.
In 1993 Mikhas Ramanyuk published the book Folk dress of Cha-chersk and its roundabouts. In the same year he was elected professor of the Chair of history and theory of arts of the Belarusian Academy of Arts.
Next year the book Songs and dress of Pinsk district was published. In 1995 Mikhas Ramanyuk was awarded the academic title of professor of the Chair of history and theory of arts.
During 1989-1992 a series of posters Belarusian folk dress by M.Ramanyuk, appeared and in 1995-1997 – his series of 10 stamps and 3 post-cards for the Belarusian Postal Union.
In 1996 the personal exposition Belarusian folk dress was held at the National Art Museum of Belarus. On August 22-27 of the same year Mikhas Ramanyuk went on his last expedition to Chachersk rayon of Homel voblasts.
In September 1996 hard illness interfered with normal work, last months were dedicated to finishing the monograph Belarusian folk crosses. At the same time he was declared the winner of the 1996 Award for excellent achievement in Arts.
4 September, 1997, after 52 years of life, premature death interrupted further plans. Mikhas Ramanyuk was buried, as he had wished, in Starynki village of Dzyarzhynsk rayon.
A separate page in Mikhas Ramanyuk’s 30 years’ career are his articles and illustrations in encyclopedias: Belaruskaya Savetskaya Entsykla-pedya, Entsyklapedya Litaratury i Mastatstva Belarusi, Etnahrafiya Belarusi; magazines Mastatstva Belarusi, Belarus, and other publications, where almost all range of themes connected to Belarusian folk dress and artistic cloth-making is covered. Mikhas Ramanyuk is the author of 30 articles and about 200 scientific works on Belarusian material and spiritual culture.
All his life M. Ramanyuk has spent collecting, saving and studying the most valuable of Belarusian national heritage and material culture of XX century, connected to traditional dress and other types of folk crafts (folk objects of everyday life, village architecture, folk art). M. Ramanyuk’s collection and archive includes more than 100 000 units of unique ethnographic material, collected with his own hands. Travel diaries make up tens of volumes. M. Ramanyuk has left after him fundamental mono-graphs partly ready for publishing - Belarusian folk crosses, Belarusian painted carpets, Belarusian painted chests, an album Belarusian folk dress. | ILLUSTRATIONS REVIEWS AUTHOR AWARDS |
